STILL UNDEFEATED!

The in-house battles were quickly drawn up between the Captains with in-house family matches avoided, even though I was tempted to suggest match up’s between the Yule’s & Snashers!!

All of the Original’s singles players were after a match up with Captain Winkle, who had played three and won three in singles. That honour went to Lee Histed who made everyone aware that he was taking his scalp.

Unfortunately the heavy weights, myself and Thomas could not play and with all the last minute rearrangements to allow for the Surrey Fives match to go ahead on the Saturday (which they won away at Shirley Park), a few team alterations were made and new pairings were formed.

I arrived back at the club to the great news that we were up in one match and had already won two of the other matches, with Ian Fowler & Lee Snashford defeating the Orignal’s Captain Simon & Harry 5 & 4, which the biggest win of the day.

Hew & Jaggs had also taken another 4 & 3 convincing win against Sharon & John with Mr Jaguar finding some fine form on the back nine.

The first match with Scotty & Vice Captain Dan Mason was one up going down the 17th against the Bry/ian’s. So with beers in hand me & Simon were looking down the 18th to see if the match was live or all over. We saw two balls laid up before the lake and Brian hitting his second close to lake, but nicely positioned at the front of green. Then came the big man, Scotty hit a fantastic ball (now known to have mud on it) which just missed the bunker and bounced into the lake. This left Dan with nervous 60 yard chip onto the green, which unfortunately found the bunker. Bryan has already chipped to about 10 feet and with Brian giving him a free putt, even with Dan’s best efforts to get up and down from the bunker, Bryan stunk the putt for the Original’s first two points.

News soon came into the clubhouse from on-course reporter Phil Mcvie that our first two singles matches had both won. Lee Feasey beating Graham Loveless 3 & 2 and Al Gollop beating Rob Hance by the same margin, which left Al with a fantastic 5 out of possible 6 points in the tournament, so far!

Unfortunately further news came in that Sean & Ritchie had lost to Graham Adams & Mushy (AKA Zorro), but I understand that Mushy’s famous putting style had not come into play.

This only left the last two singles matches on the course with us leading 8 – 4 at this point. Our on-course reporter Phil had been provided with some dummy information that Winkle was one up, because others had already been told he was at least four down. This news was also closely followed by the news that Al Savill had gone 4 & 3 down to Dave Francis, who apparently played out of skin.

We soon got good intel from Phil that Mark was two down and going down the 17th, so no win possible, but ever hoping for a remarkable halve, noting he had been down four in the match.

Everyone was back out on the patio looking down the 18th and with no obvious signs that the final match was all over, we first saw Mark hitting his second shot onto the edge of the lake. Lee hit a fantastic shot onto the green for two, so with no shots on the hole, we waited to see whether Mark would take his shoes and socks off! He obviously took his time, contemplating his line of attack and he eventually decided to hit the shot backwards. It found the front of the green, but with him needing a win to halve the match, it was pretty much curtains. He made a great effort with his first putt, but with Lee hitting his putt inside Mark’s, we were all expecting the handshake, but NO. Rumours stating speculating that maybe Lee had taken three of the tee, but we soon realised that Mark was clearly not in the right frame of mind, having lost his record and the overall match was tied 8 – 8.

A brilliant day and well worth while rescheduling, unfortunately Mark’s record is now 6 out of 8, so expecting a three pointer on finals day!

We go into finals day joint leaders with the Pistol Nights on 39 points, with The Originals on 34 points and closely followed by The Early Birds on 31 points.

Still undefeated, so bring on the finals!!! Hopefully my wrist will be working by then!
