Day1 of the Surrey National Club Championship and the course was in great condition, bunkers raked (well, all the stones lined up nicely), greens cut and were firm, true and all ready for the 3 putts and the dashing of all hopes of glory. Rain held off and only some colourful language broke out across the course to shatter the quiet hum of concentration from the field.
On an overcast and windy day, only 24 were to slug it out on Day2. Dreams of club glory generally fell quite early, front 9 for yours truly and I know I wasn’t the only one. Tales of dumping pitches into water, 4 putts, and birdie putts turning into 3 putts were grumbled about in the clubhouse from several. On a long drawn out round, of all the Swashbucklers the standout round had to be Daisy who carded a fantastic level par 72. Bryan H, Graham A and Lee all put a shift in and performed well enough to come in under the day2 cut of 85.
Stuart from ‘Clan Massey’ played superb golf in howling wind on Saturday to lead the mens at one over, 73.
Whilst the Losers Swindle on the Sunday had the ignominy of handing £££ over to a certain Mr Graham Loveless (CC) for the second time in a few weeks, Jackson Massey took the men’s championship shooting an impressive 2 under with his younger brother Jay at 72 (net 67). Daisy bagged the Ladies champs. A good weekend of golf and Sunday even saw some sun peak out on a BBQ over a busy clubhouse as the trophies were handed out.
Captain Graham L mentioned Mr Adams’ qualification of Day2 as a good result, and yes, before he inevitably comments, Lee did manage to come out as best performing (Mens) Swashbuckler beating Graham’s 36 hole result by a shot.
