Surrey National welcomed Effingham in a scratch match today (Sunday). The Scratch ‘Plate’ is the competition for first round losers in the main scratch knockout, and we were drawn at home having lost 3-2 away at St Georges Hill.
Captain Mass, Danny Donegan, Scottie, myself and Jack were out against the Effingham team and we had fantastic early summer weather with us today. A very friendly team, we had a good match and they were happy to play off the whites and for the singles matches in the 2nd & 3rd …. and 4th and 5th matches to play as 4balls to help things move along.
Stu was out first and I saw Mass walking down the 17th fairway he was all square. He secured the win on what mustve been the 18th. Dan was suffering on the first tee after a heavy night and despite playing well during the game, his opponent nicked the last 3 holes to take it on the 18th. Scottie got stuck in and bought in his game 4&3.
I was out against David from Effingham, alongside Jack taking on Effingham’s young Sam. David had a few loose ones during the match and despite a few great halves, I managed to grind him down with a whole heap of pars and we shook hands on the 13th 6&5.
Jack was up against it facing big hitting Sam who was in his 2nd year out of 4 at Carolina State Uni on a golf scholarship. Though they didnt didnt put their team out in handicap order, Sam was a good player and Jack was 2 or 3 down at the turn. Despite a few putts slipping by, Jack got his head down and had a very solid back nine only to lose out on the 16th.
Good lads Effingham, and we all enjoyed post-match drinks, chat and food at the club house afterwards.
Great golf from our boys to take the 3-2 win.
Well done all, and we await news whether we play Reigate Hill or Tyrell’s Wood in the next round at home.
