A changeable day in supposed mid-June (23rd!), saw SN take a close home win by 3 from the hardened campaigners from Surrey Downs. The odd shower and a strong wind, did their best to put everyone off, and as Sean says below, home advantage to us seems limited as everyone we play has played the course lots of times or indeed been a past member!
Captain Sean’s Match Report
We won by 3 – So well done to the guys.
It is a home win where we always hope for more, but it is still a solid result – We won’t really understand the full impact until we play the return leg. Men of the match Phil and Hew securing 4 points, but just as important Graham and Mark fought back from 3 down – Every hole counts, so thanks to all the pairs.
1. Shaun Newton & Stuart Simmonds -3
2. Bryan Hogben & Steve McNally +1
3. Hew Whitefoord & Phil MacVe +4
4. Graham Adams & Mark Wheddon All Square
5. Denzil Hope & Bob English +1
I think this might be a sign of thing to come – We took 12 off Surrey Downs last year (but then lost by 18 away!). The standard of play could be higher this year – and the home advantage could be eroded as a lot of people seem to have played at Surrey National. But on the positive side, after 3 games we are unbeaten and last year’s record of never being beaten at home is intact. We just need to make sure we take some points of Farleigh next Sunday and then pick the strongest pairs we can for the Away legs after I am back from holiday.
