Start of the bank holiday weekend and we had a mild Summer’s day – barely a spot or two of rain to spoil the day but at least we finished in tshirts.
Swindle was out early today and a few of us were in the team to face Woldingham at home in the Surrey Hills League. A notably naff Surrey National breakfast later and we lined up against our sister club knowing a good result was needed.
Rob and his new ‘golf husband’ (sorry Beef, Rob wants him) Al Savs played very well together. One of their opponents really not having a good game. Our lads played were a good pairing and bought the first game in 6 up. Cracking result.
Phil and I had a solid game against Woldingham’s “straight as an arrow” Jim, and Mark. I think Phil and I have won once against Jim, but I think I at least have lost twice against him. We started quite well, going two up at one point before a couple of loose holes bought us back all square. Phil and I both played ‘ok’, not great and we missed a couple of putts when things were all even around hole 13. Lost the 13th when i missed converting a decent chip for a half, won the 14th with a birdie but when they took the 15th, both par’d the 16th and Mark par’d the 18th with a shot, we went down by 3. Good lads and a good game all said and done.
Winkle and Dom were in next and I think played well together despite the apparently constant bickering and p*sstake. Apparently Winkle didn’t turn up for the first 4 holes, but things were levelled when Dom found the 8th in two…. but 4 putted. Cue the bants over drinks at the end. Close game, they lost by 1.
The new dream team of captain Jaggs and Graham Lovely in next and that gritty pairing were fair bouncing up to the clubhouse having won their match by 4 holes.
Last in was Waynus and Tom, a fiery pairing who won by a solid two holes. Did I see Tom complaining of sore back with all the carrying his was doing? /ponder.
A great overall result, a shade under our expectations given our league position but a good result against an increasingly solid Woldingham team, who as Jim confirmed are enjoying a growing member group to choose from of both lower and improving mid handicappers.
It doesnt make great reading I’m afraid but we’ve two final games at home to move us off the bottom.
