Swashbucklers Vs Early Birds
Early Birds win 10-6
Match Report from Mark:
One down and 4 to go ! ! Not the best start, but remember last season we drew two and won one (by 2 points) before the final day when the team stood shoulder-to-shoulder and overcame the opposition. We knew this was going to be a tough opener and listening to Stuart and David after the match they had clearly fielded there strongest side and hope to make a real challenge this year !
Overall result was that we won 3 and lost 5… so 10 points to Early Birds and 6 to us. Not the worst result, especially as the Jerryattric’s won by the same margin against the SMUGS yesterday, and yes, we heard all about it in the club house ! !
So although we lost there was some great performances out there and some (“I should have stayed in bed performances”). It’s fair to say Scott and James didn’t play their best, even with Scott’s wee man giving them the yardage, wind direction, plus speed, club selection and putting line. He’s a real contender for the next round maybe.
The Co Captains did their job and came in both with wins. Lee and the big man Gollop won as expected (Lee’s words not mine) and Jim and I thought hard to win on the 18th it what only can be described as a very close and well won match (third time I’ve beaten David Little on the 18th… that’s just for you David), although Richard did choke a 2″ putt for the half on the last!
Sean and Steve were down most of the game and left their charge slightly too late, although they did make the score some what respectable in the end.
And then to the Singles, where on paper we fielded some strong players. Hew flying high with success this year had the almighty task of taking on Stu Massey, a matchup where some would have folded just at the thought of playing the current order of merit leader and most us would have loved to watch. A close match was played with some fantastic golf, which all come down to the 18th where with a shot and going for the win Hew put his ball in the water (did you put a pound in the charity pot Hew ?), so a narrow defeat.
Next out and also flying high in our Swindle order of merit and a personnel favourite pick of mine was Shaun Newton. However this match didn’t go to plan and unfortunately was another loss, a surprise to most of us. However discussing the match yesterday with Shaun and our mental guru, we discovered exactly what went wrong. Shaun discovered late on Friday that he was planning golf with Rups Sunday morning and the sheer thought of a 5 hour plus round totally destroyed his weekend and he never slept a wink ! ! Don’t worry Shaun, for the next match we get Rups membership revoked for the weekend 🙂
Next came the Hulk (aka Alan Savill, no Jimmy jokes please) who powered his way through to a win, by simply smashing the ball a country mile on the first, before displaying his gun’s to intimidate his opponent. If that hadn’t worked, he was prepared to headlock the life out of him.
And last but not least come the silent assassin Mr Bailey (silent only because he didn’t hear what you said). In Simon’s own words yesterday, he never slept at all Saturday night after being 2up with 3 to play and then losing on the 18th.
Lastly a special thanks to the reserves who failed to show up, just in case we needed them. Don’t worry Matt, the Ryder Cup selection spread sheet doesn’t calculate non-attendance. It does however calculate the scores I put in with my sometimes big fat fingers ! !
So although on paper we lost 5 & 3 (if you like) it was a much closer match then the results display, and could have been a very different end. So well done to you all.
