Maybe our Swindle Captains should be writing this (Winkle and Lee), as Ryder Cup honcho’s they are the Swindle “top-bods” this year but I’ll cover a few things to sign off 2013 in the Swashbucklers.
No doubt I’ve missed bits or just talking out my other end again… so please post contributions below.
2013 into 2014, saw another Swashbuckler take up the Captain’s mantle and Graham “CC” Loveless has done his best to dismiss the myth that captainship destroys golf games. Hammering the ball all of 159yards up the first on his Captain’s drive-in earlier in the year really fired him up! Sean has a target for his drive next year.
“CC” Graham’s consistent scoring this year sees him featuring near the top of the Order of Merit. Al Saville has also put on a charge towards the end of the year and with a string of solid results early December saw him catch Stu Massey to take the lead. Myself, Stevie Mac and Scottie Yule are clinging on for what we can get and Big Al Gollop is also steaming up there in a bid for honours.
Been some great tours and away days this year with groups going to Tenerife and the Jolly Boys in Spain. Thanks to Phil’s organising we also enjoyed the windblown Thorley Charity Day and the Sutton Green mixed open and Sean managed a group to the Oxfordshire. I think plans are afoot to extend games and challenges to other clubs in various formats, I hope they come off. I think a friendly Swindle match with Farleigh might be on the cards (Winkle?), perhaps a mixed comp at Chartham Park perhaps.
2014 sees several ‘events’, so watch this space. Al Sav’s getting married, Strongbow is 30, I’m 40 and Jerry, Brian C and Bryan Hogben are turning 60… I’ve probably missed loads. Could be a weekend comp happening, maybe an away day, but look out for a date or two in the diary. Certainly, after the recent sucess of Phil’s birthday 4-club challenge that something similar could be a suggestion, or a Ryder-cup style day between oldies/youngies or thinnies/fatties could be an option (Team Sturdy vs Team LightWeight?). If you want to have an event promoted on the site, let me know and I’ll sort it.
Speaking of events, the Captains Charity Day is happening on Thursday 13th March 2014 – speak to Mr Loveless for more info… or visit the http://surreynationalcharityday.com/ website.
Any now onto the ‘awards’
(again, please add your own contributions below)
Most ‘Overall’ Swindle wins
Barely scientific as this doesn’t take into account front/back nines, pins etc. just a raw count of who won in 2013. Halved results counted as 0.5 and unofficial Swindles (under 8) were counted if I knew of the result. So take the result with a puinch of salt but it is a result of sorts.
Joint-First – Alan Sav and Mark with 5.0 wins
Second: Matt Jaggs 4.5 wins
Joint-Third: Team Adams (Janine and Graham) with 4.0
Several contenders for Best Overall Improvement and is up for debate of course… Winkle might be in the running (best putter in the Swindle FYI), with a streak of solid scores the other month going from “whack, where did that go” to ” ‘kin ‘ell, only 37 points today”. Al Saville has dropped his club handicap by 5. Lee and I have chipped away at our club handicaps and Wayne has scored well again this year (and taken money off me regularly). Like Mr Saville, Al Gollop generally takes a profit home from Swindle (and comp) days and the sooner his Swindle handicap drops the better.
Club Round of the Year is probably Scottie Yule’s 68 gross to take the medal at the end of the summer. Behind that must surely come Wayne and Jaggsy’s rounds as they took major honours at the Blue Bogey and Captain’s Cup.
Team Win of the Year would surely be the victorious Ryder Cup team defending the title on the final day. Probably close behind would be Colin and Bob featuring in the winning team of the Surrey Hills scramble. On other team news, Phil and Daisy won loads this year, Wayne and I nabbed the Caterham Cup too. A number of Swashbucklers were in the Surrey hills league, narrowly missing out to Farleigh by two measly points in the final game and we did well in the Daily Mail 5’s getting through 3 rounds (?) this year losing to Beckenham Place on their turf in SE London.
Expletive of the Year probably Grant in his buggy telling Matt Stock where to go.
Shot of the Year could be Colin’s Nett-Condor-moment on the 4th holing his second, or Mushi’s worm-burner hole-in-one on the 7th. Sean’s comedy helicopter-swing-then-fall-on-his-arse last month on the 2nd hole could be a late contender but no camera was present. May be this would go into the Comedy Fall Award, but this is probably already won by James Murtagh falling onto a concrete pavement head-first from the “mighty” piggy-back shoulders of Winkle in Tenerife. Fortunately the fall wasn’t a great distance (!) but his skull still sent a big tremor through the pavement and we all assumed it was next stop hospital.
Cant think of anything else, please add comments (and other awards?) below.
