What a result for the Mighty Swashbucklers!!!!
Needing a win on the last day to make sure we reached the final was a big ask. We had players away and were up against the in form Bob’s Bashers who had given all the other teams a good spanking!!! I had a few decisions to make as Captain and I had put a few new pairings together.
Straight into the doubles I had the very laid back, easy-going, low-pressured Mr Simon Bailey pair with the very opposite angry, enraged, furious, heated Mr Matt Strongbow. Well what a story we had. Not having the greatest of days, they were down for long periods of the match and it all was looking glum. But a big team effort by Mr Bailey, proved to be the difference with them halving the match on the 18th. I see this as being the result of the day – a bit of true grit and determination from the pair grinding out a half. What a pair, what a result, well done!!!
Next we had the ever so trusty pairing, Hew I have to be nice to everyone and I wouldn’t hurt a fly Whitefoord, paired with Phil everyone must suffer a humiliating defeat, kill, destroy slaughter Macve. All I have to say in this match is that that they were only ever up at the first and the 18th… which is all that matters. Special note goes to Ralph on his very personal short game which was classed as brilliance by Phil. Another win 4-0.
The third pairing was a former winning pair from the previous match, Mr Chris “Grubster” Grubb and Mr Sean “I’m always right” Savedra. From playing with Chris recently and noticing him easily tearing up the course and with the very steady Captain Seanous I had no doubt they would win, coming in with an outrageous 6&5 win. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!!
Last pairing was a hit and miss pairing. Wayne “I’m F**king awesome” Nowak paired with Mark “Lazy golfer” Wheddon. Well these two certainly hit it off as between them hey were 1 under gross after the 9th, This match quickly came to a conclusion seeing them win 7&6 which should have been 8&7 according to one Mr Nowak. I could see something special happening between these two.
So after the doubles The Swashbucklers had a 7-1 lead, all we needed was 2 more points.
The first two singles saw Mr Alan Savill vs Mr English himself, and Mr Jim Doran vs Paul “keep your eye out” Delaney. From the previous year, Mr Savill has the knack of being the only team member to lose against Bob’s Bashers and he managed fantastically well to keep that record by being 5 down through 7 holes, to finally losing 4&3 to Mr English. Jim had a tough match with Mr Delaney playing the best golf he has played in a long time shooting 38 points, watching from the terrace and seeing Jim leave a 4 foot putt short for the win was very disappointing but another great result halved.
The last two singles were Tony Betteridge vs Pat Kinner and El Capitano “I’m fantastic” Feasey [Editor note] vs Peter Wheeler. Tony had a convincing 4&3 win this could be due to Pat having a rather heavy night out on the Friday, what sort of golfer does this!! The match between myself and Peter Wheeler was a close one with both playing some high level golf. I piped Peter on the 16th winning 3&2, to show how much of a good game it was I did happen to have 4 birdies in my 16 holes, I thankyou.
So a great result for the Swashbucklers, a 12-4 win, great team spirit and determination, and a great attitude from all not giving up. Special praise goes to Mr Bailey and Mr Strongbow for their determination not to give in.
Now we are only 1 point behind leading into the final day!!!!!!!
