Last weekend Scottie Yule and myself fought a great semi final match which I won on the 1st extra hole. My reward was to face the big hitting Matt Jaggs in the final. Matt is always a pleasure to play, so while I knew it was going to be a tough match, I was looking forward to an enjoyable game.
The weather was even worse than forecast. Very windy with heavy showers. On the first tee both Matt and I went left. Matt by the path and me about 30 yards further back and left! Sizing up my 2nd shot from the 2nd fairway the heavens opened.. It chucked it down. Rain and heavy wind into wasnt really what I wanted on the first approach shot but I forced my hybrid to the back of the green and a par 4 was good enough to go 1 up.
Matt and I both played the 2nd well; halved in par 4. The 3rd has been in my head recently… I tried to cut a cut 6 iron, but almost shanked it and the ball went in the drink.. Nice! Matt stepped up and hit a great 7 iron to about 8 foot and sunk the putt! Birdie, and back to A/S.
The 4th was halved in good pars. The 5th hole saw Matt’s drive tumble into one of the fairway bunkers. A bogey 6 was good enough for me to go 1up. On the 6th i had a shot and my 5 net 4 got me 2 up!
The next few holes were a bit scrappy, Matt won the 7th but lost his tee shot right which meant my par got me back to 2 up. Standing on the 9th tee with a shot and 2 up, confidence was high. I smashed my best drive of the day on to the left side of the fairway. Matt did me by about 40 yards….. I hit the green, Matt replied hitting a short iron to about 15ft. Shambles from then on….. I 4 putted (skillz) and Matt 3 putted.. Not great! Halved.
Matt won the 10th and 11th with pars. Back to A/S.
From the 12th I decided to hit fairway finding cut drives.. This saved my round. I hit a great drive on 12 and finished just short in 2. My par got me 1 up. I hit a great cut 5 iron into 13 to par and I was back to 2 up.
On 14 we were shooting into the wind.. I pulled my drive.. Matt hit a cracker and won the hole with a very solid par.. Back to 1 up. 15th hole we both hit great drives down the middle. Obviously Matt was at least 30 yards ahead of me… Standing over my shot the words of Peter Alliss came to me, “In matchplay get your blow in first”. The wind was into and I hit a good 7 iron pin high just left of the green. Matt hit wedge slightly fat, and my par was good enough for me to go 2up.
I should have won it on 16 but opted for Mickelson golf when I should have gone Faldo. I had a shot, ripped my drive, Matt almost roofed his and hit a thin pushy 2nd. All I needed was a 5. Rather than pulling out a 9 iron I reached for my hybrid, feeling confident and pulled the ball in the trees… The worst hole for both of us Matt won with a 6!!
17th tee, back to 1up and the pressure was on… Being the great players we are ( ok I’ve had a drink), we both smashed great drives.. I actually hit the longer shot (unbelievable). Matt hit a lovely wedge to about 15 ft. I hit mine to about 7. Matt just missed his birdie putt and I had a chance to win the match and the competition. Firm, inside right… Hit it almost perfectly… 360 lip out… Sh*t! On to 18, 1 up.
Matt’s drive went left and just reached the hay. I hit a safe one and a decent lay up into the wind. Matt could only chop out and his 3rd was short of the lake. I had 100 yards to the back of the green.. I pulled the wrong club and went over the green.. I was now slightly slightly miffed. Matt’s wedge was about 30ft short.. I had a horrible downhill chip on a side hill lie. I landed it fractionally too short and left myself a similar shot again… This time I hit it stone dead; a halved 18th hole and hands were shaken.
Quick line to say thanks to Jaggsy for a great game. A pleasure to play with and thanks also to Frank and Mush for joining us.
Thanks also to Lee F for organising a fantastic event. Let’s hope this comp continues to run for years to come.
