From the unsettled weather of last weekend, the heat was back and we had two days of fantastic weather. Course still standing up well if inevitably getting firm at the end of the day. Some inconsistent bounces in and around the greens on both days proved a bit frustrating but overall course in v good nick.
Some great scores across the two days. Alan Vassay stormed the overall competition with a superb 44pts on Saturday (which included a blob on the last hole I see) for which he was rewarded with a 2shot handicap cut. Congrats.
Young Hadyn had 6 birdies for his 42pts which was matched by Al Savs’ 42 on Sunday morning. Not to be outdone, Mr Macve returned his best round at Surrey National I think – also 42pts – which also sees him down to 14.1… his lifetime lowest.
Great scoring all round it seems, a comp SSS of 36 on Saturday and 37 on Sunday. Avoiding my usual disasters, a surpringly buffer-zone score of 35pt put me waaaaay down in 35pts!
In fact a gaggle of Swashies in the top 10 (or 11 including Mr Mason). 7 out of 11. Good shootin’ all.
Sutton Green Friendly Match
We have in the past headed down to Sutton Green and taken past in several Sutton Green Mixed Opens. A nice members course down the A3 just before Guildford – good crowd down there.
Recently the date has clashed with golfing tours and we couldn’t field any teams last year and sadly they have also just cancelled this years event due to a lack of numbers. Perhaps changing the date to July or perhaps early October might enable us to help bolster numbers?
This year, under the sturdy leadership of Bronwen, we welcomed a Sutton Green mixed team to Surrey National for a friendly 4ball betterball pairs match.
Highlight of the day was the news that Dan Tully(Monster) returned his 2nd ever hole in one on the 7th. He claims it was a 8iron, but I reckon it was a hybrid. All the more impressive as he also scored very well early in the morning Stableford comp – 36 holes in that heat. Well done Dan.
A few of the visitors had not played the course before but all seemed to enjoy the challenge of our undulations (Sutton Green is quite flat!)
Bronwen and “Deadly” Dennis headed out first and set the standard with a solid win against their team captains. Heather and I played well to bring in the next win against Andy and Sarah. Graham “It’s all me” Adams and Janine secured a win in their match. Phil and Jane were up against a tough pairing, Sutton Green’s Josie apparently 5over for her round. Bo and Jo, Lee and Sharon each fought out draws as the final pairings came in with a win and loss each.
So, 4 wins, 2 losses and 2 halves for Surrey National.
Well played all – each match played in great spirits and we’d all look forward to a return to Sutton Green next year. Playing with their 2017 club captain Andy, he has kindly given an open invitation for us to take a men’s team down there later this year if there is interest, and we can find a quiet afternoon to play.
Finally, thanks again to Bronwen for all her organising, and for Ellis arranging her Sutton Green team.
