Apologies for the late post… (due largely to the weekend’s ‘excesses’). Moving on, last Wednesday was our eagerly awaited annual trek down to Ramsgate for Philip Thorley’s Pink Golf Day. Weather was fantastic, warm grey start before the sun and light breeze came out.
North Foreland – Short Course
With a handful heading down the night before, 19 of us gathered early doors and fed out onto the quite smart ‘short course’ for our regular fiver-on-the-card-third-handicap comp. Slight confusion over format, most of us assured we played stableford in previous years rather than medal, but in any case scores worked out ok. I managed to nick the overall one under nett, sorry but 2nd has slipped my mind [INSERT NAME!] but Boney and Snashers defintely shared 3rd.
North Foreland – Long Course
Nice lunch followed as the sponsors, friends and members all joined for Philip’s golf day… mandatory pink to be worn else face a fine! Shotgun start so we grabbed our teams and wandered out to our tees. Surrey National lot were in for tenners on the overall card (1st, 2nd, 3rd) as well as the overall competition, and there was a 2best-scores going towards a team prize.
Jaggsy and I were out with Will and The Badger. Started quite well, tucking a few 6pointers onto the team card. Course in fantastic condition and they’ve done a lot of work reshaping a few of the bunkers which looked great. Not so great from inside them, and a few ropey holes crept in and whilst we had a great round as a 4ball, we weren’t competiting on the overall.
We all came in during the early evening, just in time for a quick pint before heading to either the Pegwell, or the marina hotels. Matt Stock scooped overall with a very solid 35pts I think, Keiran second with 33 or 34 I think and I sneaked in 3rd with 31pt. Top play by the pros… well done.
Evening went very well. Philip Thorley hosting a great evening, raising a lot of money for charity. Round at the Wisley went well (as expected), as did the serious auction of a round with Max Orrin and Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnson. Surrey National didn’t feature that well, bit out of collective budgets, but at least Mr Winkle was appropriately fined when he decided to cop some zzz’s at the table. Drinks carried on till late in the evening, next time can we please separate Mr Adams from the red wine and lumps of cheese.
We’ve visited Chart Hills and Westerham in the past, breaking up the journey home with a round of golf but we returned again to the always quality Hever. We’ve all played there a fair bit, very nice track and clubhouse. My vote obviously also goes to the nice sandwiches after.
One slight shower at the start of the round put us off slightly but soon disappeared. Some slow play on the front nine thanks to a couple of slow 4balls ahead of us which was annoying but they melted away on the back nine. I was out first with The Feez and Backdoor. We had a good round, Lee smashing it over and around everything, couple of nice birdies between us but our scores remained unspectacular.
Al Gollop smashed the day with a very impressive 35pts… I’m sure he did the same to us last year. Well played Al.
Big thanks once again to Mr Macve who did the legwork for us again… confirming times, numbers and hotels for the away trip.
And of course, huge thanks and congratulations to Philip Thorley for the organising of yet another successful Thorley day!
